Senior Developer Experience & Documentation Engineer
- Team: Engineering
- Location: Remote
- Employment type: Contract
About the role
You’ll help developers succeed with Thally, keep our documentation accurate and useful, and build a community where people learn, contribute, and help shape what we build.
Our open-source documentation engine and managed platform connect documentation, developer workflows, and AI agents so knowledge stays useful as software changes.
You’ll own the developer journey from ‘What is Thally?’ to a working implementation and continued use. That means using the product yourself, understanding where developers get stuck, and working with engineering to make those experiences better. You’ll also turn product changes into clear explanations, and your work will influence both how we explain the product and how we build it.
What you’ll own
Developer experience
- Use Thally regularly to build real projects, test integrations, and spot friction across onboarding, configuration, publishing, and everyday workflows.
- Help developers reach their first successful implementation through working examples, starter projects, demos, and practical guidance.
- Turn questions and feedback into reproducible issues, clear recommendations, and improvements you can help ship.
- Partner with product and engineering to make developer feedback part of product decisions.
Documentation and product knowledge
- Own the quality and organization of Thally’s documentation, including quickstarts, tutorials, reference material, troubleshooting guides, and release notes.
- Keep documentation and examples aligned with product releases, validating instructions against the actual product.
- Turn recurring support questions into answers developers can find and use independently.
- Maintain a shared knowledge base so product decisions, limitations, and common solutions remain accessible as Thally grows.
- Use AI tools thoughtfully to accelerate the work while taking responsibility for technical accuracy and editorial quality.
Developer community
- Build welcoming spaces where developers can ask questions, share projects, exchange ideas, and contribute.
- Create useful technical content, including articles, videos, demos, and workshops grounded in real developer needs.
- Develop relationships with users, open-source contributors, and communities working on documentation, developer tooling, and AI agents.
- Establish a sustainable rhythm of office hours, community conversations, and contributor activities.
- Bring insights back into the product team and close the loop with developers when their feedback leads to a change.
What you bring
- Hands-on software development experience and confidence building, debugging, and explaining working applications.
- Strong technical writing skills: you can make a complex concept understandable without losing the details that matter.
- Familiarity with JavaScript or TypeScript, Git, APIs, and modern web development workflows.
- Evidence of helping developers succeed through documentation, open-source work, technical support, teaching, content, or community building.
- Good judgment about when a problem needs better documentation and when the product itself needs to change.
- The initiative to identify useful work, prioritize it, and follow through.
Helpful, not required: docs-as-code, MDX, Next.js, CLI tools, MCP, or AI development workflows. You don’t need to have held a developer advocate or documentation title before.
What success looks like
Developers get started faster. Our docs reflect how the product actually works. More developers return, share what they’ve built, and contribute.
Community questions lead to better guidance and better product decisions. We’ll measure the role through those outcomes, supported by onboarding completion, recurring support issues, documentation usefulness, and meaningful community participation.
Why Thally
Developer experience is central to the product we’re building. You’ll have room to shape how developers discover, understand, and use it, and to make their experience better through both words and code.
If you enjoy building things, explaining them clearly, and helping other developers succeed, we’d like to hear from you.
Show us how you help developers.
Send your CV, a cover letter, and any examples of your work you would like to share. Tell us how you help developers succeed and what draws you to Thally.
What happens next
The next stage is a short practical assessment covering documentation engineering and technical writing. We will send the instructions by email, and you can submit your work by replying to that email.
You do not need to complete the assessment before applying.
